A DNA Test – Should You Have One?

A DNA Test – Should You Have One?

So long as you have not been living under a rock in 2024 (those of us living in Nigeria can say thank you to Obasanjo’s internet) you have probably had your social media feeds abuzz with so many hot takes, tweets, trends, and what we like to call gbas gbos all around one single term – DNA Test.

So why is there so much fuss about it anyway?

The general and popular reason why people run a DNA test in today’s modern world is to ascertain the paternity of their children. Let’s be honest – that’s a valid reason for taking a DNA test, however, there are other important reasons why one could take a DNA test. But before we get into all that..

What does a DNA test really mean?

It is a scientific analysis of an individual’s DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the genetic material that carries the instructions (for the tech savvy folks, think of it as several lines of code) for the development, functioning, growth, and reproduction of all living organisms. To simply put, a DNA test also called genetic testing, analyzes ones DNA to identify unique variations in our body make right down to a cellular (tiny) level.

A DNA test is performed by taking a sample of an individual’s saliva or blood, to provide information about their genetic makeup. There are several types of DNA tests available, each serving different purposes:

  • Ancestry DNA Tests: These tests provide information about an individual’s ethnic background and ancestral origins by analyzing their DNA against a reference database of genetic markers from diverse populations around the world. Its quite commonly performed in developed countries.

  • Genetic Traits Tests: These tests reveal information about inherited traits such as eye color, hair texture etc.

  • Paternity or Relationship DNA Tests: This type of testing is quite common in Nigeria. It is used to determine biological relationships between individuals, specifically parentage or siblinghood by comparing their DNA profiles.

So, to answer the big question “Should I take a DNA test?”

Taking the test is a matter of personal preference. It really depends on your reason for wanting to do so. You want to rule out the possibility of paternity fraud? Hey, we won’t judge! However, there are many other important reasons why it is ideal to take a DNA test, and they are mostly for your own benefit.

Through genetic DNA testing, you can get insights about probable health risks ranging from cancer to heart disease, neurological disorders, and many other risky diseases. Having this information in time can help you start preventative measures or at best help you manage the disease properly if it can’t be avoided. With genetic testing, you can make healthier food choices when you get to know about your intolerance, and allergies, all leading to a healthy lifestyle.

Genetic Testing is a very important aspect of precision medicine. With these tests you are rightly informed and aware of your genetic makeup and body type, making it easier to plan your diet and exercise accordingly. Genetic testing will give you an idea about your likelihood of injury, your weight loss tendency with exercise, your muscle power, and much more in detail, and thus achieve better fitness results. You will basically achieve more with less because you’re rightly informed.

Before deciding to undergo a DNA test, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is your reason? That is, what is your motivation for taking a DNA test? Do you want to learn about your ancestry, uncovering potential health risks or understand your genetic traits? Once you can identify your reason for wanting to take a DNA test, it will help you choose the most appropriate test.

  1. Are you prepared for the outcome of the results? DNA test results can sometimes reveal unexpected or sensitive information especially if it’s not what you were expecting such as unexpected biological relationships or increased risk for certain diseases. You must consider how you might react to such news and whether you are prepared to handle the emotional stress that comes with it.

It’s important to consult with a genetic counsellor before taking a DNA test if you have concerns about genetic health risks or are unsure about your biological relationship with family. They will help provide guidance, interpret test results, and help you make healthy decisions about your health and wellbeing.

So yes, DNA tests offer a glimpse into our genetic heritage and provide important information we need to know about our health, ancestry, and relationships. However, it is also wise to approach DNA testing with caution and preparedness, considering factors such as privacy, emotional readiness, and the accuracy of results.
