You Are Probably a Few Steps Away from Damaging Your Kidney Through These Common Practices.

You are probably scared by the headline, I know. But yes, we all should be.

Rated as one of the most vital organs of the human body (usually comes in as the third most vital organ after the brain and the heart), the kidney plays a crucial role as an organ in maintaining salt, water, and acid balance in our body. Living without a functional kidney is, in most cases, practically impossible.

Yet, there has been a rise in kidney failure cases in Nigeria and when we take a closer look at our lifestyle and behaviors, we may just be responsible for putting ourselves at risk of kidney damage and, in turn, kidney failure. Here are some common practices that could hurt your kidney without you knowing it.

  1. Herbal Concoction Abuse: A lot of Africans and people living in developing countries would like to disagree or argue here but there is proof that a large number of herbal remedies (largely prepared by untrained and unqualified quasi-herbalists and not subject to proper drug testing) blend a mixture of leaves, greens, and other compounds into concoctions that are largely nephrotoxic i.e. toxic and highly dangerous to the kidney. In fact, several herbs have been shown to cause renal (kidney) injury, with the best-known case known as herb-induced chronic kidney disease (CKD). Some of these mixtures even contain uncontrolled doses of orthodox drugs like steroids which, when consumed in inappropriate doses, are quite lethal. 
  2. Poor Hydration: The phrase “water is life” isn’t just a metaphor, it is the truth. Here’s a fun fact – the human body is made up of 60% water and we can’t survive more than a few days without it. Insufficient hydration forces the kidneys to work much harder, potentially leading to organ stress and poor function. Staying well hydrated helps your kidneys clear sodium and toxins from your body with ease. A tip – be sure to consume at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day and your kidneys will thank you for it. 
  3. High Sodium Diet: Salts are used to enhance flavor; however, excess consumption can be harmful to the kidney. Diets high in salt are high in sodium which can raise blood pressure, putting undue strain on the kidneys. You shouldn’t overeat salt, you can flavor your foods more with herbs and spices rather than salt. By embracing a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, you can strike a balance that helps to support your kidneys. 
  4. Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol disrupts the control mechanism that controls kidney function. While an occasional toast might seem moderate, an excessive consumption of alcohol doubles the risk of kidney problems. Moderation is key, and sometimes abstinence might be the best. 
  5. Abuse of painkillers: Using over the counter medicines, such as NSAIDs and Analgesics such as Ibuprofen, Tramadol and Paracetamol can damage the kidneys. The same also applies to the recreational abuse of drugs. Avoid using painkillers without a doctor’s prescription and do not abuse drugs.

While this is not an exhaustive list, some kidney problems may arise as a result of these common practices which at a glance may not look so dangerous. Take note of these practices, avoid them, and this will keep your kidneys functioning in great condition for a very long time.

Finally, regular checkups are important for early detection of kidney problems. Simple blood and urine tests can identify potential issues before they progress and cause permanent damage. Here are some other tips for healthy kidneys.

  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Get good sleep.
  • Exercise regularly.

Remember, if you take care of your kidneys, your kidneys will take care of you!
